In south Cobb County we provide AC and heat pump service, repairs and replacements, with Mableton the city we cover most directly. Most homes here are owner-occupied, so many households are deciding whether an aging system is worth fixing under today's refrigerant rules. The work also has to answer long humid summers and winters with real freezes.
Mableton and the south Cobb side
Cobb County had 766,149 residents in 2020, third in Georgia, and about 64 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. On the south side, Mableton became a city in 2023 after a 2022 referendum and is now Cobb County's most populous city. It keeps the 1843 Robert Mable House, a reminder of how far back the area's history runs even if the city government is new.
For heating and cooling, the useful question is not when the city formed but what is in your attic and side yard. We start every visit by reading the equipment data plates: age, refrigerant type and tonnage tell us more than the address.

R-410A, A2L refrigerants and an aging system
R-410A has a GWP of 2,088 and is non-flammable. Its replacements in new residential equipment, R-32 and R-454B, are both A2L, meaning mildly flammable, with GWPs of 675 and 466. The federal rule does not require anyone to replace a working system.
On May 21, 2026, EPA finalized a rule lifting the original January 1, 2026 installation ban for residential and light commercial R-410A equipment built before 2025. If you are replacing in Cobb, that means you may be offered either type for a while. We explain the service and parts tradeoffs of each so the choice is yours. Our refrigerant guide for Georgia homes has the longer version.
Heat pumps through a south Cobb winter
January in Atlanta averages a high near 52F and a low near 34F, with roughly 40 freezing nights a year. That is mild enough for a heat pump to carry most of the season and cold enough that defrost and backup heat get used. A heat pump maintenance visit tests the defrost cycle and the strip heat before the first hard freeze.
In summer the same unit runs as an air conditioner through about 44 days a year at 90F or hotter. Running year-round means a heat pump racks up hours faster than a straight AC, which is why heat pump repairs often cluster in the shoulder seasons when the unit switches modes.
Heating and cooling work that fits Cobb County
Heat Pump Repair
South Cobb heat pumps run in both seasons and often fail at the switch between heating and cooling.
Heat Pump Maintenance
Roughly 40 freezing nights a year means the defrost cycle and strip heat need testing each fall.
AC Replacement & Installation
Owners of aging systems in Mableton now choose between R-410A stock and A2L equipment.
Refrigerant Leak Repair
With R-410A on its way out of new equipment, finding and fixing a leak beats recharging the same system every summer.
Smart Thermostat Installation
Heat pump wiring needs the reversing valve and aux heat terminals set up correctly on a new thermostat.
HVAC Inspection for Home Buyers
Buyers in south Cobb benefit from reading the data plate and refrigerant type before closing.
Cobb County heating and air questions
A2L means mildly flammable, and equipment using R-32 or R-454B is designed and installed with that in mind. The risk is low with correct installation. The bigger practical question is parts and service availability, which we cover when you compare options.
Yes, in many cases. EPA's May 21, 2026 rule lifted the original January 1, 2026 installation ban for residential R-410A equipment built before 2025. Variable refrigerant flow systems have a separate January 1, 2027 date. Supply of that older stock will not last indefinitely.
Those are the seasons when it switches between heating and cooling. A sticking reversing valve, a weak solenoid coil or a thermostat setting that flips modes too often all show up then. A unit that runs year-round also simply has more hours on it than a summer-only AC.
Read the data plates for age, tonnage and refrigerant type, check the outdoor coil and the indoor drain pan, and run the system in both modes if it is a heat pump. An inspection visit gives you that in writing so you know what you are inheriting.
Not as a rule. On most of Atlanta's winter days a heat pump heats efficiently. Costs rise when the strip heat carries the load on hard freezes or runs because of a fault. A dual fuel setup is one way to let gas cover the coldest hours.
